何の前触れもなく突然カツオの声が変わったことで多くの視聴者から問い合わせが殺到したが、その後高橋の容態を知ると、多くの励ましや回復しての番組復帰を願う声や手紙が寄せられた。励ましの手紙の中には中田英寿やF1レーサーの中野信治からの手紙もあり、高橋は病床で「私の宝物」と言って喜んでいた。

しかし、その願いも空しく、病状は重く事実上手遅れであった。1999年3月23日午後5時、逝去。享年70。誕生日を迎えた3日後のことであった。永井一郎によると、危篤状態の際、周囲が「高橋さん」と呼びかけても反応が無かったが、「カツオ君」と呼びかけると「は～い」と小さく返答したという。

葬儀の席では、波平役の永井一郎が弔辞を担当。波平がカツオに話しかけるような口調で、涙ながらに「こりゃ、カツオ。親より先に逝ってしまう奴がどこにおるか!?」「カツオ、桜が咲いたよ。どうだ、散歩にでも行かんか」等と呼びかけ、多くの人々の涙を誘った。本人は冷静に語ろうとしたが、感極まって涙声となった。
